Last Tuesday, a coalition agreement was reached. The agreement touched upon many topics of importance but the burning question is how will it affect migration and development policies; and particularly diaspora engagement?
One of the biggest highlights from the new Dutch coalition agreement is an increase in the development aid budget, from 118 million euros in 2019 to 331 million euros in 2021. The focus is on tackling migration at its root. Another highlight from the coalition agreement was the mention of legal labor migration, referring to labor migrants who could make a positive contribution to Dutch society.
IOM remains open for exploring new partnerships with organizations in order to address root causes of migration (such as under-development, climate change) and tackling irregular migration, as well as facilitating regular migration schemes.
This is in addition to diaspora being able to transfer their skills and knowledge, as well as, sending remittances to their country of origin, therefore directly contributing to achieving sustainable development goals and combating migration at its root.
