Migration & Diaspora Podcast: What Motivates Diaspora?

You are here: Home / News / Migration & Diaspora Podcast: What Motivates Diaspora?

18 May, 2021

Listen to the podcast here

What motivates diaspora members in the Netherlands to use their knowledge and expertise to support the development of their countries of origin? Loksan Harley from Homelands Advisory was curious to find out. Listen to this episode of his Migration & Diaspora Podcast.

In this podcast, Loksan interviews Zuhur Mohamed about why she wants to give back to her country of origin and IOMNL’s Nina Staal about how people like Zuhur can get involved.

Zuhur lives in the Netherlands but has a Somali background. She considers it her mission to ensure equal opportunities for everybody, regardless of their origin. For our CD4D programme, she started automating financial systems at the Somaliland Ministry of Justice and soon applied her skills in other departments. What should have been three months turned into a 2,5-year stay in Somaliland. Her assignment allowed her to build a big network of NGOs, governments and companies.
Zuhur: “There are so many possibilities for sustainable development in Somaliland, everyone is curious and future-oriented.”
